Effects of Acanthopanacis Senticosi Radix and Its Subfractions on Longitudinal Bone Growth of Adolescent Rats

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives : Acanthopanacis Senticosi Radix, the dried root of Acanthopanax senticosus (Rurp. et Maxim.) Harms. is one of the widely used drugs in traditional Korean medicine. This study was designed to investigate the effects of A. senticosus and its subfactions on the groowth of longitudinal bone in the adolescent male rats.
Methods : A. senticosus extract was lyophilized after 70 % ethanol extraction, and fractionated by hexane, ethyl acetate and water. Water fraction was further fractionated according to the solubility against ethanol. Longitudinal bone growth was measured by fluorescence microscopy after injection of tetracycline, which formed fluorescent band to the bone forming sites.
Results : Treatment of A. senticosus extract (100 mg/kg) significantly enhanced longitudinal bone growth (p＜0.01) compared with control group. Water fraction increased bone growth significantly, but other two fractions did not. Both subfractions of the water fraction increased bone growth significantly.
Conclusion : Administration of A. senticosus extract enhanced longitudinal bone growth of the adolescence male rats, and its active components might be contained in water fraction.
